Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When you build in the world, you build in your mind!" I want to take our daily literacy and STEM learning experiences well beyond just typical read-alouds and note-taking scenarios into making learning relevant and "worth it"! Kids need to be empowered. Only THEY can show how THEY see the world.

The goal for this project is to unlock imagination.

Students will take concepts in science like molecular motion, the water cycle, magnetism, plate tectonics, seed growth, etc. and represent them though film. In addition, I would love for them to attack complex mathematics concepts and word problems and break them down visually using the stop motion model. Learning takes place when kids are able to create a visual model of a predicted outcome. This generates questions that encourage arguments, opinions, and the search for evidence. No "yes" or "no" questions here! I envision an output of many STEM films that show concepts that students can't see or touch. What would Earth be without gravity? Let's create a film and make this kind of thinking visible. It is empowering to be a story teller. Learning that is created and owned by kids is the most valuable, engaging, and relevant.

My Project

Technology must have a clear purpose, if not, it becomes a distraction. By requesting a variety of challenging technology tools (iPods, iPad, windows laptops, Chromebooks) students will have to take their everyday thinking and constantly refine it to meet their film goals. They will need to frame, capture, and edit, all while judging what will be the right tool for the job. I wholeheartedly believe that learning is rich and fun only when it is challenging. The complexity of using this technology will provide a constant challenge. This concept is also supported by the variety of art supplies that I am requesting. I want students to Build! The world as I see it is different than the world as they see it. I want them to control their space, control their time, and mold their art supplies into an electric circuit or show the effects of global warming on the ice caps. In addition, I want them to show what happens next and share the unique understanding that they have gained.

Film-making is an art form that is accepted and celebrated in our society.

It's the ultimate form of communication and will spark a great deal of excitement in our community as a first, one-of-a-kind way for students to communicate what they are learning. It is collaborative, promotes a great deal of decision making and critical thinking. It allows student creativity to flourish in many directions. Few mediums allow you to think about the past, present, and future all in the span of minutes.
