My Project

Third grade has in its daily routine many opportunities to learn. One of the most opportune periods occurs within the Shared Reading block. It is a time in which we interact with well-chosen texts in order to explore our world, strengthen our comprehension skills, and build a solid foundation in each student's ability to formulate text-dependent responses. Often, students use paper and post-its to document understandings and misunderstandings of these texts.

One reliable active engagement tool - Stop and Jot- promotes each student's inner conversation about the text and helps to set them up to identify the evidence needed to build longer written responses.

Having students write their responses clarifies the responsibility of the student and allows the teacher to receive information which helps to individualize the next steps for each learner.

Well-written responses are the seeds of informative conversations in class. They support ownership of the learning as the students are invested in supporting the thoughts they've shared with details from the texts.
