Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in an area in Miami called West Little River, where about 90% of the family households are living below poverty. Many of my students are living in single-parent family homes, homes where other family members are raising them, or homeless shelters. However, despite their situations my students come with smiles on their faces daily.

My students are great students who are excited about learning .

Therefore, I want to reward them with the best . I teach US History, Civics, and Creative writing class to 6th-8th graders at a Title I school, where about 90% of the students are receiving free or reduced lunch.

Because of their environment, my students experience a multitude of problems which interferes with their achievement and success. I grew up in the inner city of Miami and know what poverty is, but despite my struggles, I was able to be successful with the help of my teachers. This is why I became an educator so not only I can instill the knowledge in them but I can also guide and support them to become successful.

My Project

My students are inquisitive learners. They are curious and always asking questions and seeking answers. They do their best to stay alert and focused throughout the school day. My 7th grade students are preparing for a state Civics exam and need all the support to keep them engaged and alert. Our school provides a breakfast and lunch daily but many of them need healthy snacks to keep them alert throughout the day especially at the end of the school day. Many of them stay after school to participate in after school tutorials and enrichment and other school sponsored activities.

My students would benefit from getting healthy snacks to keep them focused and engaged in their learning throughout the long school day.

My school is a Title I school located in Miami. This means that about 90% of the students receive free and reduced lunch because of their low socioeconomic statuses. Some live in shelters and others cannot pay bills and cannot even afford a meal and definitely not a healthy meal. Many of the students and their families suffered from Covid-19. So my students truly understand what it means to appreciate their life inspite of everything going on. My students still maintain a smile everyday and battle life in this difficult time. So school is a safe haven for many of my students to get nourishment, love, encouragement and something to eat. This is why my project is important because it will provide the students with extra fuel that is healthy that they need to stay focused, nourish their bodies and minds, keep their stomachs full and minds motivated.
