My Project

At EB, we've begun a new tradition of sending our 8th graders off with a Civil Rights tour of Atlanta and Alabama -- but we need more texts to teach them essential Civil Rights history before they go! At our school we fund every 8th grader to go on this tour -- but we know the pandemic has left them with holes in their knowledge of the Civil Rights era.

We've booked our Civil Rights tour next year, but students need engaging texts to fill in gaps the pandemic left in their knowledge of Civil Rights history and heroes.

Students have just returned from our inaugural Civil Rights tour and as a teacher, I realize I wish I could've prepared them more. They lost out on history lessons to distance learning and teacher turnover by no fault of their own.

Experiential learning in Atlanta and Alabama will be more powerful if they've read about Civil Rights icons like Ruby Bridges and John Lewis. The books I've selected will be available to students in our in-class library for daily independent reading. Plus, I intend to use some for mini lessons, like excerpts from Bryan Stevenson's "Just Mercy" before we visit his Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum in Montgomery.

Finally, I've included a number of popular titles that bring everyday Black joy into our libraries, books students recommend to each other by authors like Jason Reynolds and Kwame Alexander.
