Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is an area where almost all of our students qualify for a free or reduced lunch, but you wouldn't know it by their smiling faces and infectious attitudes! It is truly a joy to be teaching them. Even during the pandemic, all of our k-2 kiddos are here every day, masked up and ready to go!

As an art teacher, I want to support their learning in any way that I can with interdisciplinary lessons and trying to make things as much fun as I can so that they really want to come to school.

Incorporating science or social studies into art helps our students learn that everything is interconnected so everything they do here is important! We are trying to create a sense of what being an artist means by getting students involved with what's in the world around them and what they personally have to do with it.

My Project

I use an behavior management/achievement incentive program that I've called Art Bucks.

When a student does excellent work, a class job or extra work above and beyond, I pay them Art Bucks.

Once a month they get to shop in my Art Store. By far the most popular item are sketchbooks.

I have to buy hundreds a year to keep up with demand. Help me buy other stuff for them by taking on the donation of sketchbooks to reward a bunch of awesome kids who really appreciate them! Thank you!
