My Students

Picture a physicist. What does this person look like? Typically the answers are like Einstein or Sheldon from Big Bang. Over ninety-five percent of students asked, will picture a white male. Now picture the typical mix of students in an inner city US High School. For nearly everybody, these two pictures don't match. Physics and engineering is not nearly as diverse as it needs to be. My goal as a former college professor transitioning to teaching high school, is to give more women, minorities and other underserved populations a positive exposure to physics in high school so we can start making the physics community more diverse and inclusive.

This is my first year as the physics teacher at Edison High School in Northeast Minneapolis.

Edison is a Title One school where all our students get free breakfast and lunch. Nearly half the students enrolled in my physics classes are English language learners. Eighty-five percent of our students are non-White. I am teaching four upper level physics classes (two of them co-taught with ELL teacher) and one section of IB physics.

My Project

I am a new high school physics teacher and I walked into a classroom that was completely empty. There are no basic supplies, no decorations, no physics lab materials and no technology. I have been doing my best to stock this classroom from my own pocket and materials I had saved from my previous job as a college professor; however, I need your help to get my classroom ready for the students! My classroom is very interactive. In each class, I have students work in groups to solve physics problems and then have each group share their work. I have five sections of physics with thirty to forty students in each, so I need a classroom set of whiteboards and markers to help me make this interactive classroom possible. I bought the whiteboards, but I need the markers, erasers and cleaner to go with them.

Our students do not always have the money to buy pencils, pens and lab notebooks.

I would like to provide these items for students who need them. My students also need all basic lab supplies such as scissors, tape, a stapler and more that will help the students complete their lab notebooks. We need post-it notes so I can provide students feedback in their lab notebooks. I also need an organization system so the students can clearly see where to hand in their work.

In our classroom we use our whiteboards during STEM focused groupwork. My students work on their math, physics and other science skills by sharing their knowledge with other members of the group. Having basic classroom supplies will help me and my students focus on learning physics.
