Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our public school in the South Bronx, approximately 60-80 seventh—and eighth-grade students would greatly benefit from participating in a crochet club that focuses on learning traditional and modern crochet techniques. This project will give students the necessary materials—such as crochet hooks and various types of yarn—to create scarves, hats, hand-crocheted bags, and other projects. It will also provide snacks for any hungry tummies!

Crocheting is a tactile, creative activity that promotes positive mental health by reducing anxiety, improving focus, and providing a calming, meditative experience.

Research shows that repetitive crocheting can help reduce stress levels by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, creating a sense of relaxation and accomplishment. Learning and mastering a craft such as crochet boosts self-esteem and fosters a sense of agency.

This club will also encourage family connection and intergenerational bonding. Students will be encouraged to teach family members the skills they learn, turning crochet into a shared activity that strengthens relationships at home. Families may also benefit from receiving handmade gifts made by the students, fostering a sense of pride and gratitude.

This club is open to all students. By working in small groups within the crochet club, students will build meaningful peer relationships, practice collaboration, and develop communication skills, all contributing to a positive and supportive school environment. The final products—scarves, hats, and bags—will serve as tangible reminders of their creativity, effort, and growth, further contributing to a sense of personal accomplishment.
