My Project

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Becky Stratton-Cooper, and I am a teacher at WMHS, where I have the privilege of working with a wonderful group of students, some with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I am writing to you to seek support for an exciting and enriching quilting project that I believe will greatly benefit my students’ educational and personal growth.

Project Goals and Educational Impact

Our quilting project is designed to provide students with a hands-on, creative learning experience that will foster not only artistic skills, but also critical life skills. The specific items we are requesting—fabric, quilting needles, thread, cutting mats, and sewing machines—are crucial for facilitating this project. These tools will enable our students to engage in a tactile activity that enhances their fine motor skills, encourages patience, and boosts their self-esteem through the process of creating something tangible and beautiful.

Goals for the Project

The goals for this project are multifaceted. First, we aim to improve our students' fine motor coordination through the precise work required in quilting. Second, the project will help develop social skills and cooperation as students work together on quilt designs and share responsibilities. Lastly, we want to provide an inclusive environment that nurtures creativity and self-expression, empowering each student to contribute uniquely to our quilting project.

What Makes Our Students Special

The students in my class are extraordinary individuals who bring diverse perspectives and unique talents to our school community. They are characterized by their incredible focus, attention to detail, and genuine enthusiasm for learning. Despite the challenges they face, these students demonstrate remarkable resilience and creativity. They thrive in environments that respect their individual needs and encourage exploration. This quilting project is designed to be such an environment—one where they can shine.
