STITCHING THE FUTURE: Chavez Theatre Needs Sewing Machines

My students need sewing machines for our large costume design classes. We aren't asking for any fancy machines. We just need enough for kids to work on.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For so long, my students believed that they were second class citizens who could never excel at sports, academics, or the arts; however, we learned that they were bursting with raw potential and just needed to be seen and heard. Our school is a Title 1 predominately Hispanic population with a large immigrant population and have our challenges.

Not only do my kids struggle with real world issues that no kid should have to deal with like poverty and violence, but they felt the immediate effects of Hurricane Harvey in August of 2017.

Homes around our campus had water above their roofs, but despite all of their hardships my kids are hardworking and kind and fantastically special. The parents of our students won't even come and see them on stage or attend their college visits. Who was going to invest in them? It became their mission to show the district, the city and the world that despite their zip code, they can change the world.

Our kids are our soul. They make the job worth it. They deserve all the things to be successful and to have the platform to show who they are and where they are going.

My Project

Not only will sewing skills help and elevate the theatre program, teaching this textile skill in our classes will give our students the opportunity to go out and get jobs in the service industries within THEIR community. Not all of our kids are going to utilize their skills within the theatre world and we acknowledge that; however, they will need the spatial, creative, math, and work ethic skills they need to be successful within their community.

Additionally, when so many of our kids have experienced trauma, doing something like sewing or costume design is therapeutic while teaching them a viable life skill.
