My Students

Have you ever been so overwhelmed with your day that you've come home unable to decompress? My students study all five of the core subjects as well as classes in their arts major on a daily basis. For many, after homework and chores there is no time for relaxation. Knitting can change this!

My students attend a 9th-12th grade High School in NYC which specializes in the Arts.

They have their arts classes programmed into their day so that they are always in attendance. This works well for my students because they are exposed to their art on a daily basis. Unfortunately, because my school spends the majority of its funds making sure that my students have all of the ballet slippers, paint brushes, violins, and sheet music that they need it is impossible to offer any extra curricular activities after school which require funding.

My Project

Where other schools offer after-school activities on a regular basis, my students don't have anything to do outside of their Major to help them bond with one another. Most of our students only associate with others who share their Major. Teaching students how to knit after school will build a community and create not only small handcrafted projects but also friendships across the Arts Content Major lines. Knitting has been known to teach children how to focus, improve reading and math skills, as well as build confidence. Through this after-school knitting course the students will be able to learn a craft that will stay with them all of their lives.

There is nothing that compare to the feeling of pride that comes with completing a knitting project of your very own.

The joy of giving your first dishcloth to your grandmother is unlike any other. Knitting can take your mind off of the sad and difficult things going on in your life as well as provide an opportunity to sit and think things through or talk them over with your fellow knitters. Donations for this project will allow my students to create as well as relate on a whole new level.
