My Students

My students have an enthusiasm for learning. They are budding scientists and are always engaged when it comes to our science activities and learning new concepts. "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." -Ralph Waldo Emerson We use real activities to spark interest and curiosity.

Our K-5 students are from diverse cultural backgrounds.

They are inner city children who love to learn and explore. Due to space and location constraints, we are limited in terms of where and how we can learn about living things and how they grow. Being from the city, they are not exposed to gardening, although to them it is magic when they see how seeds germinate!

My Project

This classroom lab will provide our third, fourth and fifth grade students the opportunity to take part in lessons about plants and the environment. We are learning about seed germination, plant life cycles and plant adaptations. The look on our students' faces when they see seeds growing is so heartwarming. They become excited to see that they actually helped something grow. We use plastic bags in the classroom to see the stages of development. But with this GrowLab, we can then watch them mature over time.

We are in the city and do not have outdoor space to grow plants.

Since we are in school during many of the colder months, it hasn't been possible to see the plants grow to maturity. We usually can begin seed germination, but once we have seedlings, we just do not have anywhere for them to grow and by then, school closes for the summer. This lab will allow them to start the process sooner and have the much needed equipment to care for the plants during all seasons.
