Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are mixed General Education and Special Education students who are excited about their upcoming seventh grade school year. They are 75% reduced-price lunch students who come from various types of backgrounds and cultures, but who are all "my kids" during the school year.

My students demonstrate the ability to persevere throughout the school year as we read engaging texts dealing with daily struggles for the main characters.

These texts allow my students to connect to the character and see how their daily lives are not as difficult as they may appear.

My Project

As we read, analyze, and annotate Chains, students are asked to study the text looking for signposts, figurative language, characterization, and conflict. The more supplies that students have at their disposal, the more likely they will take part in their reading.

Some students are intimidated by the larger post-its.

After giving out smaller post-its, students were encouraged to write brief responses instead of lengthy responses that likely took them out of the head space of their reading and removing them from the text when they should be notating and moving on.

Also, the first wave of binders were such a success from our refresh that they have gone quickly. It has encouraged students to keep their binders neat and clean and purge items that were weighing them down without adding to their education.

In addition, students noticed that some of their resources were damaged. I would like to have a laminator and laminating sheets available for student use so that they can see which items are worth keeping for long periods of time and may even think of using the items for the following school year!
