Sticky Fingers and Green Thumbs - After School Science Club

I would like to start an after school science club, wherein my middle school students would pay for their own supplies by growing plants for a sale and making bird feeders with pine cones and recycled plastic containers. This proposal will cover start-up costs and our club would sustain itself by these sales. Requested are: fish line, paints, paint brushes, peat moss, various seeds, flower pots and more.

Help Mrs. L.

Our middle school has been asked to join in a district-wide effort to curb our high school drop-out rate. Teachers are being challenged to offer incentives or programs to sustain or retain interest in school. I would like to start a science club after school for seventh and eighth graders to aide in this effort. There is no funding for this, so I am responsible for finding a way to raise money for our supplies. We have grow lights, the local farms for compost, and several interested children. By raising flowers and making bird feeders out of recycled milk and juice containers for a sale, we ensure that your generous donation of start-up costs is recycled - providing year after year of opportunities for many students. The fishing line, paint, paint brushes and wooden dowel supplies will go towards making our bird feeders. We've collected hundreds of pine cones already and will only need to purchase bird seed and peanut butter. Our towns recycle, so just about every child will have a recycled plastic gallon or 1/2 gallon for the feeder project. The potting soil, fertilizer, plant sticks, pots, rooting hormone and seeds will help with our spring plant sale. The money we earn will go towards several things. First, we will reinvest in materials for the following year's bird feeder and plant sale. Then, we will be able to use any left over monies towards purchasing magnifying glasses and other science supplies for our club. We hope to eventually have enough plants to help decorate our local chamber of commerce, our town art center and our school. Incorporating community service into our club is an easy way to make sure that our students are invested in their community. They need to feel a sense of accomplishment and ownership for their successes. This investment after school will hopefully help to make a dent in some of the apathy for higher education here in our valley. Thank you for considering this proposal.
