Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Wraparound services will take on new meanings when 150 of our scholars convene for "A Roadmap to Manhood," my school's first annual young men's symposium. This community-based lift to elevate young men by exposing them to purpose-driven possibilities for their lives will include three impactful general sessions and 10 breakout sessions that reflect our scholars' most pressing needs. Our topics include dating etiquette, entrepreneurship, fatherhood, financial literacy, grief and loss, health and nutrition, hygiene, making wise choices, resume writing, and interview skills.

We need your support to prepare our students for their interviews.

We have identified the people part of this project, and we even have the place. What we need are the things for work, and neckties are at the top of our "things needed" list. Some may argue that we could solicit gently used neckties, but we invite you to consider the poverty-induced shame our students feel when they are constantly told that their only choice is a second-hand one.

While a new necktie seems small to some people, it is a big deal to a teenage boy who is preparing for his first or second interview. A necktie communicates professionalism and respect for many people, but a new tie is symbolic of self-respect and self-worth for young people who are fundamentally poverty-stricken. We invite you to lend your resources to help us help our students make a confident first impression when they arrive at their interviews.
