Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being a 4-year-old is a messy business, and as a Pre-K teacher, that is just how I like it! This is why we need Tacky Glue, Mod Podge, and a housekeeping set for our class. These materials will enable the children to make a variety of art projects, as well as to learn about getting along through play.

Our students, ages 3 and 4, come from an extremely challenging inner city neighborhoods.

Most are from single-parent households, live in extreme poverty, and are from immigrant families who have not yet learned to speak English. Since most of our children have had very little or no pretend play or art experiences at home, it is very important that they have these opportunities to play and create in school. Young children learn through play, and it is just amazing to listen to them as they begin to speak to each other in a new language. The thrill of creating their own collages, gluing, painting their own wooden buildings, and working together to clean the housekeeping area with (4-year-old-sized brooms!) helps them to experience themselves in a completely new dimension.

My Project

With the glue and Mod Podge, the students will learn to create their own toys, including ring toss sets, papier-mache creatures, wooden buildings, alphabet books, and cardboard doll houses. All of these things can be easily made from recycled materials, but we need the glue that binds them! What the children experience from making their own toys and books is priceless, and you can almost watch their self-esteem grow before your eyes!

Pre-K is where a child begins to form a picture of themselves as a student, and research demonstrates that a student who thinks they are successful in school has a much greater chance of actually becoming successful.

That said, I hope you can help our children make the most of their first school experience by sticking us with glue!
