My Students

"Go wash your hands!" is a phrase spoken many, many times in the preschool classroom. Whether it be before snack time, after arts & crafts, or in response to booger contact of any type, our preschoolers often find themselves at the sink, reaching over on their tip-toes, trying to wash their hands.

Even though my Pre-K students have varying special needs, one thing is common among all of them: the difficulty in safely reaching the school sinks to wash their hands.

Our campus was built with first- through fifth-graders in mind (with kindergarten classes housed in "kindergarten-sized" facilities), so unfortunately our preschoolers are left to use sinks that are too high to reach without assistance. As independence in adaptive skills is a top priority, being able to send students to wash their hands without worrying about safety is of utmost importance. Additionally, we have a couple students who require gait-trainers and assistance with standing, so having steps with handlebars -- or otherwise barriers to keep from falling to the side -- will greatly enhance their independence throughout the school day.

My Project

The steps I am requesting will be used in our classroom, as well as the school bathroom in order to be able to safely reach the faucet and soap dispenser. At this time we have stools that, while stable, still require some of our students to stand on their tip-toes to properly wash their hands. Especially with cold-, flu-, and allergy-season greatly affecting our students, washing hands is a vital component of the school day. With the requested steps, all of our students will have the ability to safely reach the faucet and will increase all of our students' independence in this many-times-daily activity.

With your donation, our preschool class will be provided with tools needed to facilitate independence throughout their school day.

As small children with special needs, our students may often lose their independence in performing simple tasks due to safety concerns. While washing hands may be something we all take for granted, our students still need to wait for a teacher to complete the task. Having these steps will help our students to increase their independence while staying germ-free!
