Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an amazing group of enthusiastic and curious learners. Despite the many challenges they face both inside and outside of the school, they do not let obstacles get in their way. They are motivated to learn more about the world around them and it is in the classroom that they deserve the opportunity to do that on an equal playing field.

Students' shared experiences in the classroom are made even more special because of their unique perspectives.

The diversity in my classroom and the school at large is reflective of our unique neighborhood in New York City, and students from all backgrounds unite around a love of learning. We serve a population that includes a number of English Language Learners, students with a variety of learning disabilities, and many students that are living in high poverty and have insecure access to food and housing. When they come into school each day excited for what's ahead, I want to ensure that there's nothing standing in their way.

My Project

In today's world, technology is at the center of everything we do. Whether communicating with others, expanding our understanding about the world, or simply just taking some quiet time, one would be hard-pressed to do so without the presence of a computer, tablet, or phone. As an educator, it is part of my job to ensure that my students have the necessary skills to succeed in life both personally and professionally. Therefore, it is crucial that technology has a consistent presence in my classroom.

With access to Chromebooks, my students will be able to work towards the vital skill of computer literacy.

Students will use these Chromebooks to type up writing pieces and increase keyboarding speed; they will use them for research, expanding on their inquiry skills and their ability to put learning in their own hands; and they will use them to communicate with others in both their classroom and around the world through different apps and websites. The Chromebooks will additionally create a more accessible learning environment for the different types of learners in my classroom. Students will benefit from being able to speak their writing into the tablet, or having more books at their fingertips, or even having educational videos and apps that will let them practice their math skills.

The possibilities are endless with the addition of these Chromebooks. They will make a world of difference to our classroom, as they open up a whole new world for my students.
