Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 22 young students who are the perfect picture of pure GRIT. They range from three years old through five years old children whose English is their second language. What they lack in language the make up with perseverance. My kids range from different socioeconomic status. I teach a bilingual primary class in a public Montessori School. They not only come to learn academics they learn to become part of a community. They help each other, they teach each other, they lift each other up and they cheer for each other.

Cesar Chaves said, “We draw our strength from the very despair in which we have been forced to live.

We shall endure." My kids struggle every day, but they still come in with the biggest smile ready to try again. Teaching them is a privilege because I get to witness their perseverance and grit. They inspire me. Montessori education is usually only available through private schools. My students know the privilege of belonging in a Montessori school and they take full advantage of it. My classroom is mostly their first school experience. During the pandemic I suspect they fell behind in their academics. I have

My Project

The majority of my students do not have access to books at home. They perceive books as a privilege. Their background knowledge is limited across the content areas. They need concrete materials to understand concepts across the curriculum. Some concepts I present through different materials to ensure mastery.

The material I chose will allow me to create the foundation and create background knowledge.

I strive to create opportunities to gain social and academic vocabulary through out the curriculum. In our classroom language is a gift. My students come in eager and ready to learn.
