As a teacher in a very low-income/high poverty school, I find myself providing the students with the materials needed to be successful in their daily studies. Each of my seventeen students come from very diverse and ethnic backgrounds. Despite the daily challenges at home, my goal is to provide a positive, fun, and meaningful work environment that will expand their minds and increase their love for learning.
I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can provide a safe and consistent learning environment that will help to alleviate the stress of their everyday home lives.
My students love to learn while singing, dancing, and using hands-on materials. I would love to make this year in kindergarten a year that my students will remember for the rest of their lives.
In kindergarten, we mainly focus on English language arts and mathematics. We rarely have time to incorporate Science lessons into our daily curriculum. My students and I would love to have a Science center in the classroom, so we can have experience exploring the different elements of Science. All of the scientific materials are grade appropriate materials that will help my students be successful in exploring the realm of Science. While using the Science materials, the students will be able to socially interact with their classmates and build relationships. The life cycle and specimen boxes will allow the students to explore the growth and development of the world creatures. The specimen boxes will allow the students to touch and interact with skeletons of animals and also other parts of the animal. The students will enjoy learning about insects and animals in a hands-on and involved way. Each year, I buy caterpillars for the class and we watch the life cycle develop before our eyes. The life cycle box will help us to really understand the cycle with hands-on pieces and information about each cycle. The viewers will allow the students to see images of creatures that they have never seen before. All of the information we learn with the scientific materials can be translated into our daily writing. I really believe these materials will help my students become life long learners!
