Help Ms. Stork

"Can't we read something that isn't so touchy-feely?" The males in my literature classes tend to enjoy the tales we read such as "Tuesdays with Morrie" and "Fire from the Rock," but I still hear complaints from students craving action and adventure. I have realized that the best way to meet this demand is to offer literature from one of the creepiest authors around. My students love reading in small groups and have grown to know their literature circle as a second family. As the students become more familiar with the format of group readings and discussion, I would like to offer them the chance to read novels independently from other groups. In past years my 10th graders have sponged up King's spell-binding descriptions and vivid imagery depicting the confusion and hallucinations of a lost and terrified girl. While this is the typical reaction of students at high-achieving high schools, my students rarely have even finished a whole book when they enter my classroom. The greatest gift I can give my students is the ability to connect with literature in a similar way to their higher-achieving and economically better-off peers. While our school is consistently listed as in "academic distress" and is considered poverty-stricken, we are working steadily to improve our state test scores and the learning experiences of all our students. While my students have rarely completed reading an entire book by their mid-teens, I know this situation can change. My students deserve to love literature, just as any other student does. My school is limited in resources and is unable to supply a classroom set of this novel. My students need a class set of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King. With additional copies I would be able to assign this novel to separate literature circles, allowing them to experience the novel in a personal way in their own space. Personal copies of the literature also allow students to show the novel to others, thus spreading a love of books and increasing my students' analytical abilities when others ask them questions. Please help my students to develop an interest in reading this year. Your generosity will help empower these students to identify with literature and will help hook them into becoming life-long readers.
