My Students

I'm a firm believer in keeping the focus on what is really important. That is students and their learning. Whenever possible, I stop by Starbucks on college campuses because it is where you see students in their natural element: learning, communicating, and experiencing. Imagine that for elementary kids!

We strive for hands-on, real-world experiences to instill important life lessons.

Our classroom isn't about pencils, paper, and tests to learn!

You might think that a school within walking distance of the world's most beautiful beaches has everything it needs. However, a majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. As a tourist community, a lot of our parents have seasonal jobs, and things get tight during the off-season. That doesn't stop our students from aiming high. We are a "Leader in Me" school, so we set and track goals weekly. We live by the 8 Habits. Our students have ambitious goals, and their aspirations will stop the cycle of generational poverty. We have future astronauts, presidents, and doctors. As a smaller school, we know most of our students so we're able to hit the ground running on day one of the new school year.

My Project

A few months after Hurricane Michael ravaged our close-knit town and threatened our futures, our school administrators sent a group of us to a "Get Your Teach On" conference. We all came back re-energized and motivated to help bring some normalcy back to our students. The whole premise behind this conference is that student engagement is critically important to long-term learning and building relationships and trust in a classroom. We learned how to "set the stage to engage" (Hope and Wade King) and create classroom magic to make learning so much fun, students think they are actually just playing! The presenters are some of the most innovative educators in the county, and we grew so much with the information they shared with us. We were ready to go back to school and get to work. Student engagement doesn't have to be expensive, and we learned all kinds of ways to create classroom transformations on a dime.

To celebrate the huge leap in standardized test proficiency, we wanted to welcome the students back to school with a magnificent classroom transformation of a carnival!

What a great way to use games and play to review last year's standards and concepts with the students as they return to school. We are requesting books to build background knowledge, carnival games to use for students to play as they answer questions to last year's standards, and carnival prizes/foods to reward students and motivate them to do their best. Decorations will transform our classroom into a magical stage of learning, and will include things to interest every student. We want the students to put last year's devastating hurricane behind them, and realize that not every school year is interrupted for four weeks while we pick up the pieces after the storm.
