Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creativity enables innovation. As a teacher I provide students with a block of time to explore their ideas, and as an art teacher I help them focus their energy and creativity into meaningful products. I am helping the students connect creativity to STEM; exploring creative paths to success.

My students attend a Title 1 school, so they come from homes that are financially burdened.

This can, and does, often prevent them from experiences that require a financial obligation. But, they are just as eager, curious, and brilliant as those students who come from more affluent communities. While their classroom teachers provide them with rich experiences, I hope to enrich their extra time – between school ending and parents returning home.

My Project

"It is the tension between creativity and skepticism that has produced the stunning unexpected findings of science." - Carl Sagan. I have created a culture in the art room free of fear to explore creativity, and a place to be safe from the judgment of peers. Here, all ideas are valued and validated. Building confidence in the art room, through observations and experimentation, encourages confidence in the classroom. In this case, students will be exploring robots through artistic creation – making sculptures using upcycled materials. My hope is to extend the learning from art to practice and theory. That is where the robot kits come in. Students will learn how pulleys, levers, and motors work through a hands-on approach.

The arts develop creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, communications, self-direction, initiative, and collaboration.

These skills will benefit students in every area of education, such as operating/strategizing within constraints or ability to make decisions in the absence of rules. When we apply these intellectual benefits to STEM my students will develop the ability to dig deep, think creatively, and find alternative solutions to a problem that was not previously considered.
