I teach 4th grade Math, Science, and Social Studies at a Title 1 school in Katy, TX. We serve a minority population, comprised predominantly of at-risk students. While my students are a unique blend of academic abilities and personalities, we work together to overcome our odds and get the most out of our learning experiences.
My classroom includes students with general-education needs, learning disabilities, monitored students in the English Language Learners program, and students still recovering from all the losses caused by Hurricane Harvey.
Needless to say, the classroom environment and climate that I provide for my students is critical to their success and overall well-being. After suffering through Hurricane Harvey, my students continue to have a passion for learning and overcoming any challenges that come their way.
My Project
It is already challenging enough for 8-to 9-year-olds to be expected to remain seated and silent for about 7 hours a day. Couple that with their personal challenges, and it's a recipe for disaster in the classroom. Most of my students need a physical outlet in order to be able to move their bodies in non-disruptive ways that allow them to focus and stay on task. These STEM opportunities will offer my students a healthy physical outlet that supports student engagement, focus, and motivation.
Ever tried to teach a class with kiddos that struggle to find a purpose in learning or do not feel challenged enough?
With these STEM opportunities, they will be able to dig into their creative mindset to build, invent, and create valuable projects. Students will build a new sense of motivation for learning through these challenging and rigorous projects. My students need STEM options to help them channel their energy in a non-disruptive and positive way!
