My Project

I'm a small group reading intervention teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school and over 95% of its students receive free lunch.

The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments and most of my students reside there.

Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.

This year I am teaching a STEM-themed class with a group of third, fourth, and fifth grade students. So far the students have loved all of the STEM challenges they've completed, but I'm running out of materials to continue on with these challenges through June--that's where you come in! In a few short weeks we will be transitioning to a unit on circuits. We are requesting STEM motors kits and STEM Scribble Bots kits so all students have hands-on practice making a few kinds of simple circuits. We are also requesting materials for paper circuits, like LED lights, copper wire, and lithium batteries. We will use these materials along with the gingerbread house kits to make holiday-themed house models that actually light up!

In addition, I am requesting a binding machine and binding materials. These items will be used in a variety of ways. Students can publish writing and bind it together; we can also create individualized communication books, task cards, and student dictionaries using these binding materials.

The decodable reader sets, laminating pouches, and variety of squishy fidgets are everyday basics that keep students organized, on task, and reading "just right" materials.

These STEM materials, simple circuitry materials, and other basics will make our class a success. Thank you for your generosity!
