Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Density is an abstract concept. Each year, it is one of the hardest concepts for my 6th grade students to master. Visual models and hands-on experiences are the key to mastering abstract concepts. My students need to see and manipulate density in order to truly understand it.

I teach around 90 sixth-grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system; there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

These materials will provide multiple visual demonstrations and interactive experiences for my students. A water tank demonstration will enable students to see the density differences between warm and cold water. Examining the layering will lead students to connections with plate tectonics, weather, and ocean currents. Watching the rise and fall of the lava lamp will help explain convection currents and emphasize how heat relates to density. Students will use density blocks to explore how blocks of the same size can have very different masses, and thus different densities. Students will also use the balances, beakers, and graduated cylinders to mathematically calculate the density of different everyday objects. Together, these activities provide a density unit that goes beyond memorization. Students will observe and explain density in multiple situations, leading to a deeper and more meaningful understanding of this complex topic.

These lab materials will greatly enhance our lessons on density.

Having multiple concrete experiences will make it much easier to master the abstract concept. Since most of these materials are reusable, this project not only benefits one group of students, but will enrich our classroom for many years. Help bring these concrete lessons to our class.
