Literacy is the foundation for all learning in a kindergarten classroom. In order to be a successful scientist, mathematician, technician or engineer, you need to be able to read and write. I work at a very diverse STEM school in Seattle. My students come from a variety of different learning backgrounds with lots of different expertise. It is my job to help prepare them for the rest of their educational career.
It is so important to me to help my students build a strong foundation in literacy.
I want them to love reading and writing just as much as they love science experiments and engineering challenges. They already are full of life and imagination and I want to be able to help guide them to build and explore their skills further to become life long scholars.
My Project
I truly cannot emphasize enough how literacy is the foundation of all learning. It is so important for students to be strong readers and writers no matter their interests. Athletes, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, explorers... everyone uses reading and writing in all of their fields. It is my job to get students just as excited about reading and writing as they are about science experiments and mathematics.
Literacy is incorporated into everything we do in kindergarten each and every day.
We start each day with literacy stations, where students are able to choose activities that they want to work on either independently or with a partner. By having engaging activities and game that are literacy based, I have the freedom to work with smaller groups of students on reading and writing skills that they are working on. Our Phonological Awareness Folder Game also creates learning independence and accountability, which help students build their motivation to be life-long learners.
By having fun and interactive games, students are more like to be engaged in their learning and want to do the activities again and again. This, in turn, will help them master foundational literacy skills to help them be strong readers and writers all year long!
