Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are the English Language Learner magnet school for our district. Our school has a 65% ELL population. Many of our students have just left their home country and are coming to the US for the first time. Also, our school is a Title 1 school where over 93% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the family's low socioeconomic status.
Today's children need to learn by doing, making mistakes and learning from them.
I want to give my students experience in the world of robotics, coding, and programming in order for them to create and learn every year. As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district, many of my students are struggling readers. Programming and coding is accessible for lower readers and offers them an area in which to succeed. I wand to inspire and engage students while encouraging their thirst for lifelong learning by providing them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
The School Library is not just a place for books. In today's world, it is a Media Center that provides students the opportunity to read, create, learn, and collaborate. Students must have digital literacy skills and strong communication skills. The Sphero is a robotic ball that is controlled through programming apps. Using Sphero will teach students basic programming and coding skills and challenge students to work in small groups and communicate.
Using Sphero will offer students a hands-on opportunity to learn that provides immediate feedback in a fun and interesting way.
It will increase student engagement and interest in STEM.
STEM education at an early age is a necessary part of the education system today. By funding this project, you will help expand the lessons and projects that can be done in class. It will also provide advanced students extra practice with new and unique technology that this school otherwise does not have. Not only will this year's students benefit from this project, but students in the future will benefit from STEM lessons using Sphero.
