My Students

Science is almost the forgotten subject. That needs to change. In order to be successful in the 21st century, my students need to learn all about science, develop their scientific vocabulary, and learn about the scientific method.

I have been teaching second grade for over ten years, but this year it is very apparent that my students lack the vocabulary of science.

I have 24 wonderful students. My school is over thirty years old and although we are designated high poverty we are not Title 1. Over 60% of the children at our school are eligible for free and reduced breakfast and lunch. My students try very hard to learn and they are fascinated by their world. They want to learn about animals and weather. Six of my students are in Indian Education, two in Special Ed, and three in ESL. We cannot afford to go on field trips so everything we do (learn) takes place in the classroom or the playground.

My Project

My students deserve a chance. Every year they fall further behind because my school is old and underfunded. My classroom library is out of date. I try to supplement my library by buying books at yard sales but I know this is not a good solution because often the books are out-of-date and have misinformation. We need leveled science reading books that are appropriate for all my students. My school does not even have science textbooks for second graders. I have taken workshops on teaching science and other teachers have demonstrated how they are using iPad minis with their students. I would love to have an iPad mini so that I could set up a science station in my room with appropriate apps.

We have no science textbooks and our classroom lacks science books on an appropriate reading level. If students do not have access to books in the classroom they will not learn about science concepts. I want to start a science center with an iPad mini and leveled science books but have no money to buy the items we need. Please help me.
