The students that I see each day in my three fifth grade classrooms come from a very small, rural farming town. More than fifty percent of our four hundred students are on our free or reduced-price lunch program. We have students from all types of homes from diverse backgrounds.
My students never cease to amaze me with what they can and have overcome.
They are sweet, beautiful souls who deserve my very best, and that is what I strive to give them each and every day.
My Project
Why coding, you ask? Coding not only increases students' technology skills, it also helps kids visualize and understand abstract concepts that they will face in math class. In writing class, kid who code better understand the importance of paying attention to details and planning. Coding even increases student confidence, as they learn to problem solve and find success through determination and perseverance.
As a teacher, computer science is a whole new world for me, but my students live in this digital world, so it is my responsibility to meet their growing needs and prepare them for the future.
Our students are expected to know so much more, technology-wise, than we were ever required to know during school. Having tools, such as the Let's Start Coding Base Coding Kit, Botley the Coding Robot, the ThinkFun Circuit Maze Electric Current Logic Game and STEM Toy, and the ThinkFun Code Master Programming Logic Game and STEM Toy to use during our daily enrichment period will allow children the opportunity to learn through play, which is more authentic, and let's face it, much more exciting, than a teacher simply telling them about coding.
