My Students

My students thrive on learning about the world around them; science is their favorite subject. Although geological opportunities in our small rural community abound, students do not have access to science museums, aquariums, zoos, and the discovery museums that stimulate scientific thinking.

Because our community is located in a remote area, travel to larger cities to participate in science related activities is impossible for the vast majority of students.

A large portion of my students are from single parent homes and over half of the district's population are classified at the poverty level and one-fourth of that population are classified as inter-generational poverty students. Most parents work in the tourism industry and most of these parents work more than one job.

My Project

These requested materials, the quantity dough mats, number line activities and the STEM Lakeshore bundle, will allow students to not only think mathematically and scientifically, they will be exposed to real-world challenges where they will be asked to explore all elements of the scientific processes. Students will move beyond simple exposure to scientific and mathematical topics to hands-on discovery learning.

Students who live a four-hours drive from the large city filled with scientific discovery will be exposed to scientific experimentation using materials that foster experimentation and play.
