This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"It is not up to us to decide who has greatness in them." This quote, by Dr. Calvin Mackie, an engineer, who was encouraged by his teacher, has inspired me to help my students tap into the greatness they have within them by helping them become 21st century learners and our future STEM leaders.

My students are children that are faced with challenges on a daily basis.

Ninety-eight percent of them are on free and reduced price lunch. Many have lived and experienced things that no child should ever experience, and yet they come to our school with a desire to learn, and a resiliency to overcome the obstacles in their lives. They attend a school in an area that is faced with extreme poverty, drugs, and sometimes dangerous situations. Some of them also come from families that are transient, migrant workers, moving from one state to another in order to work and support their families. But despite all of this, my students bring with them to school, a love for science and a desire to learn, which inspires me to guide them in becoming our future scientists and engineers.

My Project

Though it seems like all students should have access to "modern day" technology, we still lack the resources that can provide my students with a competitive edge in becoming 21st century learners. The resources that I am requesting will help my students with learning necessary skills and real-life experiences that embrace all of the STEM initiative. They will be able to do science through hands-on inquiry guided by books, such as "sheep in a jeep", and "building bridges," use technology, via the iPads to record, take pictures and document their findings, learn the importance of engineering process skills, that include creating, problem solving, designing, through building structures, and vital math skills, through application, collecting and graphing data, using measurement, and seeing first-hand how geometry plays a role in the world around us. All of this will be done with activities that promote teamwork and collaboration like real scientists and engineers!

Our future, as a country, depends on how many of our students are going to grow up to be scientists and engineers.

Statistics show that at least 75%-80% of jobs will be related to STEM fields. Just like the teacher who inspired Dr. Mackie to become all that he could be, by your support, you will become my partner in showing my students that greatness lies within them!
