Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a hard working and energetic bunch of 2nd graders in the Bronx. We are a Title I school with very diverse learners. Today's students need more attention than ever. My students vary in learning styles, academic levels, behaviors, race, and economic level. All of my students have very unique needs, and learn very differently. I am constantly searching for ways to best help each and every child.

I work in a high needs school.

Use of technology is pivotal to life skills in this day and age.

I have students with varied skills and these would help to differentiate for them. My students need to know how to utilize technology effectively, and to be able to access knowledge in an efficient way. There are so many great lessons using the internet, but impossible to implement without the technology available.

My Project

My students need games and activities that focus on the alphabet, letter recognition, and writing to explore with at Learning Center time. Our students will use these materials to explore their ability through building, drawing, making letters and sounds, and then words! These activities will be used during Learning Center times throughout the day as we read and write while learning together.

We also need butterfly kits and caterpillars to help my students get a hands-on learning experience with the butterfly life cycle.

They will be able to handle parts of the life cycle while watching the growth and change of each caterpillar into a butterfly. Our second grade standard has life cycles for the students to master. This concept is best mastered with students doing hands on activities with the life cycles. This project will allow the entire second grade to have butterflies to care for and eventually set free.

This will allow my classroom to watch the life cycle of a butterfly.

They will be able to watch their caterpillar grow into a beautiful butterfly, and this will be an experience they will remember forever! Most students will learn about life cycles from a book, but our students will learn from an amazing experience. Once they change from caterpillars to butterflies, our class will be able to go to a nearby park and release the butterflies into the wild. Each student will have a chance to feed the caterpillars and write about their learning experiences.
