Students in my 3rd grade class are active, creative, and full of wonder! They absolutely thrive on hands-on engaging projects. While so much of our educational focus is on language arts and math my students need materials to foster their love of learning, which will in turn create critical thinkers, increase science literacy, and result in the next generation of innovators.
Nestled behind the Redwood Curtain in Eureka, CA many students come to school from trauma based homes.
Humboldt County leads California in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Students enjoy coming to school because they find it to be a safe place where schedules and routines stay consistent, food is available, and teachers and friends are abundant. I make it a priority to create a family like atmosphere in my classroom where risk taking is encouraged and mistakes are accepted!
My Project
When my project is funded students will have access to many STEM activities! Many of the activities are individual or small group focused, so students may work on a project when other work is complete. I will have STEM scheduled into my lesson plans allowing for inquiry and project based learning. I will be creating independent thinkers that will feel confident in planning a project and executing it allowing for possible failure, but persevering through to the end.
To succeed in our fast paced ever changing technological society, students need to have opportunities to be hands-on and minds-on with STEM activities.
