My Students

Hello, Generous Donors!

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

I am a science teacher at an elementary school in the south Bronx, NY. The school is a Title I school, due to the poverty which affects the community. Our school has a large population of special needs, and English Language Learners, in which hands on learning is needed. The science program does not receive any outside funding, and the students here could really benefit from having supplies, that would enable them to be engaged, while learning important skills.

The children are beautiful, elementary aged children, with an eager to learn! The United States is behind in Science, and there is a push for science learning! 'STEM' or 'STEAM', is the catch phrase that stands for: Science, Technology, Engineering, (Art), and Mathematics- and these are the areas in which we are focusing on. Building blocks, such as Legos, are an amazing tool for many STEM activities, because you can incorporate math, science, and creativity, etc., with endless possibilities!

My Project

Since most of my students lack access to hands on materials, that are the key ingredient in science exploration, I am asking for help in giving these children the tools they need to ignite their curiosity about the world around them! I am requesting building blocks, (similar to Legos), to give the children endless, creative, hands-on experiences; Such as, when we incorporate math and engineering into our bridges unit- the children can build a model of their bridge with the building blocks. When we study mountain ranges, the children can create a structure to represent the map of mountains, with the building blocks!

I am also requesting owl pellets, for a true scientific experience, when the 4th graders begin learning about the food chain.

Our school is in a very urban area of the Bronx, and the students are usually surprised to find out that the Bronx is home to many owls- which is also a real life connection. *(Fun Fact: Our school mascot is also a 'wise owl'! :-) ) The other STEM materials contain mechanical features like wheels and gears, for the many subjects in science that pertain to force/motion etc.

Hands on experiences truly help children internalize what they are learning, and allow them to make real world connections! When these connections occur, more questions arise, which allow our children to become independent learners, and have a desire to learn more beyond the classroom! Our school's mission is to help shape the scientists, doctors, inventors, computer programmers, (etc.), of tomorrow...
