My students need hydroponic garden kits, as well as a fish tank and a butterfly kit in order to supplement our STEM curriculum on ecosystems and natural habitats, all while we grow our own salad garden.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach in a New York City public school district. Our borough has been recognized as one of the most diverse in the nation and our school community speaks many languages.
Our children come from many countries, speak many different languages, and bring with them a wealth of cultures that enrich us all.
The families, students, and school all have success as a goal, and our students are hard working, motivated, and love to learn. My fourth-grade students are creative and enthusiastic learners who love a challenge. Our best projects are the ones my students create collaboratively, where every idea is considered and tested. They take pride in their work.
My Project
I'm excited to teach my students about ecosystems and natural habitats as part of our science curriculum. Creating a space in our classroom for natural habitats will aid my students in learning about the interaction between plants and animals. My students will also have the opportunity to grow and harvest their very own salad garden!
Growing their own “salad” garden will give my students a unique and authentic experience.
Not only will it help build science enquiry and invaluable STEM skills, but it will also encourage our students to form healthy eating habits. By growing their own food, children will learn important life skills, such as how to plant and care for their very own salad vegetables, including lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and various herbs. This will help promote knowledge of where their food comes from and the importance of cultivating and caring for our agriculture.
In addition, we will build on inquiry skills by caring for and observing our butterfly and fish habitats. These habitats will teach the children about the food chain and ecosystems.
