My Students

I have 13 amazing students with special needs, ranging from 8 to 10 years old in a self-contained classroom. They have autism, Down syndrome, and learning impairments. These kiddos are near and dear to my heart because I have an adult son with severe special needs. He's my inspiration and the reason I became a teacher.

My Project

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM Bins are small, colorful kits that can be held in children's hands. Each kit contains a different type of building material (EX: magnet tiles), a set of visual task cards (EX: "Build a house."), and a written response sheet (EX: "How many inches high was your structure? Was it hard to build? What did it make you think of?"). I love how the kits are made to fit a wide range of learners - from non-readers to writers! Perfect for my classroom!

STEM education is an opportunity for students with special needs to use higher-level thinking and problem-solving skills in a fun way.

The children will have access to the bins each morning upon arrival for 15 minutes, and during any free-time they may have during their day. This does two things. First it gets them excited to come to school! Second, they will need to follow classroom rules to gain access. Win win!

The thought of these children getting excited about concepts like engineering and math makes my teacher heart so happy! These kits will introduce my students to STEM, inspire them, and push their creative thinking. Will you please help us?
