Stem Grows Our Brains

Help me give my students STEM items for our morning choice and fun Fridays.

My Project

I teach at a Title I school that serves about 1200 kids from Pre-K through 6th grade. This will be my fourth year teaching first grade. My students work so hard for me each week to learn, practice, and master almost 80 phonics skills. This does not include our reading, language arts, and writing skills and standards that we work towards all year long so that each student learns to read.

By Friday, my students are worn out and exhausted from our daily instructional routines.

To remedy this situation, we have fun activities on Fridays each week. We do STEM bins, board games, crafts, and create snacks together as a class. I would like to offer new STEM building materials to add to our current STEM activities. These materials will be put in pencil boxes and zipper bags for the students to choose individually as an early finisher activity or it will be a Fun Friday activity for groups of students to rotate to each week.

Another positive about these STEM materials is that they are "screen-free." My students spend unhealthy amounts of screen time at home weekly. These bins help children develop critical thinking skills while they are building open-ended objects or even completing task cards that are specific.
