My Students

My amazing students are in the Functional Skills program at my high school and range in age from 9-12th grade and Post-High which serves students ages 18-22 with moderate to severe disabilities. My students have varying degrees of disabilities but they all need to learn basic STEM skills especially in the area of math, counting and money.

All of the students in my program would benefit from having new math games and manipulatives that I can use to help them improve their basic math skills and understanding of money in a hands-on and fun way!

My Project

Working with students in the Functional Skills setting requires differentiation and patience. Even though my students are young adults, basic math skills are very challenging for them.

The items requested in the project will make learning basic math, counting, sorting and STEM skills FUN in a hands-on way.

My students will love practicing counting with pretend bills and coins in the Melissa and Doug cash box, and the brightly colored sorting and counting tools will motivate them to work independently to improve their knowledge. They will also love the challenge of the STEM design kit which is something I currently do not have in my classroom. The items requested will really help my students learn basic math skills that will improve their lives forever!
