My Project
I work in a public Title I elementary school in Brooklyn, NY. Title I indicates that we serve many children who are living below the federal poverty line, including several in temporary housing. As a school, we are committed to serving a diverse population; we have 27 home languages represented! We provide ESL instruction to 20% of our students. When we speak about our commitment to diversity, we know that an important part of this is being inclusive of all learners. We serve students with a wide range of disabilities; 20% of our students have IEPs.
We've worked immensely hard as a school to create an inclusive and supportive environment for each and every one of our students and their families.
Many of our families participate in monthly 'Family Fridays,' when they visit their children's classrooms to learn by their sides. Children frequently translate for family members, and we're proud that they feel so welcome. We believe that we are preparing our students to be active, engaged citizens of the world.
We're as serious about the importance of analog materials, like jigsaws and duct tape, as we are about digital ones, like LED lights and 3D printing pens. All of these materials will be used by children to support content learning through purposefully designed, yet student-directed, STEAM projects. Projects will include computer science related learning.
When learning and play come together, magic happens!
As they study our world (using maps and globes), students ask questions, form possible solutions, make mistakes, learn from them, and try again. This project will inspire hours of self-directed, authentic learning for the generation who will take care of the world after we're gone.
