Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher at a Title I school where three-fourths of our students are low income. My campus is a PK-4 school with about 500 students. I teach math and science for all of our campus. My students lack experiences and vocabulary. I believe that through exploration and hands-on practice our students are able to retain the content so that they are then able to articulate their thinking. My goal is to enrich our students with knowledge and experiences that will allow them to become successful adults. My students unfortunately come from single family homes, low income housing, or in some cases even homeless. We strive on providing our students with a sense of safety and comfort when they are with us. I not only teach them academics I also have to teach them social and emotional skills.

My campus is big on innovation and exploring the different avenues of land,water,air, space, and even cyber space.

The community is small but we are all united and want what is best for our students.

I want to help our students reach their highest potential and become an aspiring adults.

My Project

I am a teacher for math and science and I am currently planning a STEM Family Night. A STEM family night is an evening filled with hands-on activities that include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This event requires many resources/materials and can be a bit challenging for our school budget. Last year was our very first time to implement such an evening and it was a huge success. However, our resources and materials were very limited.

In offering these family nights it gives our students the opportunity to design and build that can easily be completed in 10 minutes with the support of their family.

In addition, this event also gives the student and parents the opportunity to connect and explore the importance of integrating ALL subject-areas. The goal is that we are able to inspire a young scientist, engineer, and mathematician, or any other STEM-related career.

The items I requested are excellent resources for my fun and engaging STEM Night.

I am planning to set up different rotations where the students and their families can explore and create. They can use the Can Do! Discovery Kits to explore science. I also want to use the Math Family Pack to engage my families to learn together. I will incorporate the Build and Design centers for student to explore engineering. The materials and resources are all important and will provide the students the opportunity to explore their possibilities!
