My Students

I am a National Board certified teacher in Literacy. I work at a Title I middle school. Many of my students come from military families due to our location near several bases. Our school is diverse with learning styles, cultures, and interests. My students are hardworking, creative, critical thinkers. My students are future artists, inventors, authors, and natural leaders. Success is at their fingertips; I know that with the right learning environment, I will nurture each and every one of them.

My Project

The materials requested will be used during several family engagement nights. Each STEM night will connect current events in science and technology with critical thinking and problem solving. Prior to each event, families will receive messages with clues to get their students excited about the up-incoming night. Students will connect the clues to the activities that they rotate and complete. Students and their families will rotate from stations completing different STEM activities. They will create a battery powered LED badge, which will be used to hold their student ID cards. Students and their families will explore gravity, motion, and force by creating a shock absorbent platform that would simulate a spacecraft landing on the moon while working with their family. To connect our students to our geographical location students and their families will build different bridges and discuss the types that carry the heaviest load. Students and their families will also engineer aluminium boats to see Archimedes's Principle and Buoyancy in action. The family STEM night will also partner with the local university to visit their planetarium so that families can have a better understanding of the resources in the community that can support their students academically. Parents and students will be asked for feedback in the form of a survey so that we can evaluate the success of the event and make improvements based on their input. Our goal is to provide students an opportunity to explore scientific concepts, to be inspired with what is around them and empower them to problem solve. They will have endless possibilities in STEM with their families by their side.
