Covid-19 affected our school and learners in several ways. Most importantly, we couldn't work together with our peers or use hands on materials such as robotics. Learners were on computers playing games often instead of schoolwork. We have been retraining them the past few years how to interact with others in a social and academic setting as well as how to use technology appropriately.
Coding and technology are a great way to do this as well as to increase self confidence and support our middle schoolers mental health.
Many learners know they struggle at math or writing, but coding is new to them so it is a blank slate and a way to develop a new skill they didn't know existed. When you see a child get excited about a new skill you know you are supporting their mental health by default.
I learned about new coding items during the Pathfinder summer program. Coding will be used with our drones and we will practice self-control with behavior because we will need to share the iPads. They can use the iPads to code and the duct tape to make models to use for videos. We lost 2 years of this hands on skill and have so much to catch up on.
Thank you for supporting our learners with increasing their self-confidence and self control in a digital 21st century world. The Covid Pandemic affected these social emotional skills and academic growth was negatively impacted and the interaction with coding and robotics will help increase their social intelligence as well as academic skills.
