My Students

The transformation from students raised in disadvantaged households to state and national champions in robotics happens in my classroom. Our boys master building and programming robots from 6th grade. We also want to videotape our activities and lessons for marketing and for online access.

Most of our students come from underprivileged households but they have parents that care and want to see their boys succeed.

In spite of the fact that most of our students ride the bus each day to and from our school, we manage to get kids committed to high academic achievement in the classroom and extra time after school. Our students wear a suit and tie uniform every day and must be fully dressed from the beginning of the day to the end of the day. Our boys are very respectful and well mannered. Our school is a Title 1 school located in a poor neighborhood. It has a fairly small enrollment of 450 and a relatively small budget which limits our ability to obtain up-to-date equipment. In spite of that, our teachers are very engaged in the success of our students and our parents are very involved in the academic achievement and conduct of our students. We also want to flip our classroom where we videotape our activities and lessons and upload them online for student access.

My Project

The laptops will be used in the classroom to help our boys learn and implement several robotics languages. The students build robots based on assigned tasks and then program them starting in 6th grade with Lego Mindstorms' software. The students progress to a C-based language called RobotC. They use RobotC to program more complex VEX robots. Students will also use the laptops to program robots during robotics competitions at locations all across our city, state and nation. With the addition of these laptops we also plan to start teaching RobotC in our 6th grade classrooms. We also plan to begin teaching Java to our high school robotics students. Students will use Camtasia to videotape and edit videos of activities and lessons for access online. They will use the mouse peripherals on their laptops. A mouse really helps when writing computer programs. They will use the headphones to listen to the videos and lessons.

These laptops will enable us to teach our students to master programming languages with up-to-date equipment.

As computer programmers, they will have a chance at success in college and in the world of work. Their achievement in the classroom transfers to success in engineering and robotics and opens them to an entirely new world of opportunities. Camtasia will assist in making the activities and lessons more accessible. We will upload them to our District web site and to Facebook.
