STEM Bins for Inspirational Mornings

Help me give my students brain flakes, building toys, and an opportunity to explore STEM bins early in the morning. These bins will give kids the chance to explore measurement, engineering, math, social skills, literacy, science and arts in a risk free environment.

My Project

We have approximately thirty minutes before the start of each day in which students have the opportunity to be creative. These items will provide students the ability to take risk free chances while they socialize with their peers, explore a variety of ways to construct and problem solve. Last year, I experimented with the STEM bins after listening to a fellow teacher explain how motivational it was for her students.

My students were more engaged during the first hour of the day, ready to cooperate and work with a partner or in groups.

Students discussed friendships, problems, excitements, and future games.

I instituted STEM bins with random things I had around the room and items I picked up at the dollar store and good will. Our mornings began with cheerful discusssions, patience as they worked in groups. As they grew in complexity and challenged their thinking, they learned patience and perseverance. Students came in excited and ready to learn. It created a safe learning place where cross curricular learning happened. Additionally, when we prepared to work in teams for math, science; students were mentally ready to participate, problem solve and cleanup.

Being excited about learning is a huge hurdle to overcome as an educator. It would create excitement and playful learning within our community. These would be shared across all of our third grade teachers.
