My Project

Our class has been working hard on our long-term classroom STEM project- an aquarium! So far, we have learned so much about biology and even chemistry over the last few months, while we take care of our class pet, the betta fish, Bingo (as well as Gary the snail, and the tetras). These supplies will help us maintain and expand our classroom tank.

My students enjoy STEM projects immensely, and I would be so grateful to be able to continue on this project that they have come to love so much!

This project has the added benefit of helping my students learn life skills, including how to take care of a pet, and the responsible way to interact with different animals. Watching/caring for the fish has also been an amazing calming strategy for my kiddos with disabilities who benefit greatly from the sensory experience it provides. See some of the lessons we have learned so far and what we plan to do in the future below:

Measuring supplies to put in our tank (gravel, water, etc)

Labeling/identifying the parts/supplies need to start a tank

Sequencing though writing step-by step instructions on how to set up our tank

Democracy by voting on a fish name

Graphing the number of votes to identify a winning name

Habitats & how to create a more natural living environment with aquarium plants and how they help detoxify & provide oxygen in the tank

Interactions of organisms in the tank that create symbiosis
