My Project

I am a total advocate for play-based learning! Play-based learning helps engage elementary students in their education and has cognitive, physical, social, and emotional benefits. Play-based learning may seem too juvenile for 2nd graders, so coming into teaching, it was a goal of mine to incorporate STEM bins.

When we give students the opportunity and the space to be creative, they surprise us every time and over the past year because of these bins, I have seen so much creativity and expression from my students.

On the first day of school of the school year that just finished, I gave every student a STEM bin. Being that we haven’t been in person since March 2020, I thought it was a good idea for my students to have something to fidget and play with to help ease any first-day jitters. As the year went on, I changed how STEM bins were incorporated. More towards the middle of the year, students were able to use the bins during indoor recess, dismissal, and during intervention rotations. I want to add to the collection of STEM bin items I already have to give students more options.
