My Students

With the increasing need to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, a& Math (STEM) education, PKY DRS high school FIRST robotics team, Roaring Riptide 4118, and the instructor of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) programs in 6th-12th grade are teaming up to provide STEM Access to ALL. P.K. Yonge is a K-12 public school. Our STEM programs are open to any student interested in primarily computer science, engineering, and/or robotics. Classes have an enrollment of approx. 150 students, per year. In these two programs, students are working to design and lead creative and sustainable approaches for introducing and supporting STEM activities that encourage and engage students of all demographics to consider projects that can truly impact their world and their own futures, by considering careers in the STEM fields.

If they can't see the opportunities and career possibilities, they can't possibly know what they may be missing out on in college/career readiness.

At school events and in the community, we've experienced a number of community stakeholders asking for more opportunities for their children to attend STEM camps or design/engineering classes. We hope to continue to expand our FIRST FLL and FLL, Jr. teams, to share our experiences!

My Project

With the ability to use project materials in smaller groups, students will have increased opportunities to build the robot challenges, along with being able to program and see the effects of their programs on the robot they've built. Currently, we only have two complete sets of the EV3 Mindstorms sets and two complete WeDo sets. We'd like to see this increase to at least a 2:1 ratio of students to robots.

When students have the opportunity to see the effects of their code from the EV3s and WeDo kits in physical computing projects, they are more likely to understand the impact, understand the code, and be able to troubleshoot and problem solve more effectively.
