My Project

We LOVE reading aloud in my class. As an elementary teacher, I have a hard time picking my favorite subject but no matter what I'm teaching, sharing a story with my students is one of my favorite times of the day. This spring we will be reading a historical fiction text, Stella by Starlight by Sharon M. Draper, set in segregated North Carolina during the Great Depression era. I would love for each student to be able to have their own copy to read along with.

Reading aloud is important because it allows us to share a story and also because it models fluent and expressive reading, and when students can follow along on their own, it also promotes deeper comprehension!

I feel strongly about sharing this story with my class this year and beyond. The class set of novels will allow each group of Fifth Graders I teach to have this experience of reading along with a text and using it during our unit on historical fiction. In fifth grade Language Arts, we are very focused on providing textual evidence and if each student has their own copy of the text, providing that will be easier and allow for fewer barriers to completing their work.
