My Students

Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska. My students can't afford field trips to science centers so we take field trips on the playground when the weather is good. School is everything for them.

I work with classes of third graders who come to the library every week for library lessons, research and enrichment.

They have warm smiles and they try very hard to listen and learn but they struggle because our school lacks the budget that supports them. Most of them are economically disadvantaged. All of them are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. Nearly 1/4 of the families now receive Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. They are struggling to stay above the poverty line.

My students need appealing books on their level that reinforce their lessons. They also need science books and resources that will expand their worlds.

My Project

Have you ever tried to do something but lack the basic information you need? My students are in that position: they need new, accurate science materials. My third graders need help to become successful. They are very excited about learning how to do science reports. This year they are going to learn everything about the planets. I planned to have them work in groups and do some research using books and the Internet. Unfortunately, the books in our library were too old and we did not even have books on all the planets. Venus was missing! My students need to learn how to use the library for research. They need to learn how to analyze nonfiction books and extract information. I want to help them become science research writers with the help of Donors Choose.

My students do not have many opportunities to actually work together on meaningful STEAM projects.

First, I will share the nine books about specific planets and space with my students using the IPEVO Document Camera system and whiteboard extension. This technology will enable all students to see and interact with the text at the same time. Students will also learn how to use the document camera. Once students are familiar with the basic information, student teams will select one of the planets for further study. Each student will use their research and papier mache to create their planet. They will share their planet and their STEAM report with the class and their parents. Finally, we will put all the planets together for a display.

My school does not have the budget to support this essential STEAM project, please help my third graders.
