My Students

My students love technology especially when they get to use it in class. Lecture heavy lessons do not engage their enthusiasm in the same way as hands-on activities. They absolutely adore being able to do their work on Chromebooks and utilize any type of technology. They love projects where they get to learn how to use programs such as Google Slides for presentations or Google Drawings for online sketches of their designs. Their engagement and curiosity is abundantly increased when I introduce technology into their assignments.

My Project

This year Cascade has become a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) school. I am in the process of learning different ways to integrate the Engineering Design Process in my teaching. I have found several ideas for STEAM projects in Math and Social Studies that would require my students to have access to Chromebooks in our classroom. We currently have 6 Chromebooks in our classroom, but most of the ideas I have for my STEAM projects require students to work in groups with no more that 3 people in them. The class needs more Chromebooks so the students can work on their projects in the ideal group size. This will allow my students the chance to fully participate in our projects and get the hands on experience they want and learning I desire for them receive.

One STEAM project I would like to utilize the Chromebooks for in Math would combine Geometry and Google Earth.

We would look at a mini-golf course on Google Earth and redesign the course using angles, lines and shapes to make the course easier for kids. Google Earth would also be used as a STEAM project for Social Studies. We would look at landforms in Utah and predict problems that Utah could face in the future. Students would design ways to prevent the predicted problems or to contain them.

STEAM projects - combined with Chromebooks - have great potential to increase the knowledge and productivity of my students. Help make STEAM a success in my classroom through this donation.
